About US
"Cooking with kids is not just about ingredients, recipes, and cooking. It's about harnessing imagination, empowerment, and creativity."

Who we are

Little Sprouts Cooking School is a home based cooking school that focuses on teaching basic to advanced cooking skills to children.  While we cater mostly to homeschool familes, we love to teach all kids and have several options for those who attend school during the day. Our classes are taught in a residential kitchen, not a big industrial one. Children will learn how to cook and prepare food with every day tools they will have access to in their own homes. We believe that this will build their confidence. Little Sprouts Cooking School is unlike other cooking schools, in that we have a kitchen garden component with our curriculum.  We also offer nutrition classes, outreach,  and specialty classes.

Nellie Johnston

Nellie Johnston is the founder of Little Sprouts.  She has an undergraduate and graduate degree in sports medicine, which focused a lot on nutrition and exercise. She was a health teacher for several years, teaching courses on nutrition, among other things.  She has been cooking since she was 14 years old, and has a lot of experience with cooking from a garden. She is First Aid certified and a certified Kids Nutrition Specialist. Most importantly, she is a mom of four kids and is passionate about teaching them about where food comes from and how it can help their bodies.

Other than teaching kids to cook, Nellie loves to be outdoors.  She spends a lot of time hiking and camping with her family.  She also loves to sew, garden, read, organize other people's houses and learn new skills.

Trisha Sorenson

Trisha Sorenson has an undergraduate in Secondary Education and has taught in both middle and high school settings.  She has experience working with young children with disabilities as a behavioral therapist and teaches piano to students across all ages and abilities.  Basically she loves to teach.  Trisha finds joy in cooking and exploring new recipes - often making her family sample recipes that are unique and full of flavor.  She loves to garden and loves summertime when most of the ingredients on her table come straight from her backyard. She shares the passion Nellie Johnston mentioned for teaching children to have a healthy relationship with food and eating real food that helps their bodies be strong.
She loves the outdoors, music, being creative and finding a way to DIY almost everything in her house.  Mostly, she enjoys being a mom to her four crazy and adorable children.
